JOIN US as we gather in North Texas with the shared vision and goal of revolutionizing our communities to implement life-saving shelter pet programs! Approximately 200,000 adoptable shelter pets die each year in North Texas taxpayer funded animal shelters. 200,000! However, a no kill nation, a no kill Texas, is within our reach. The Dallas / Fort Worth No Kill Workshop will provide the information and tools needed to do reduce shelter intake, increase live outcome rates, and build a no kill community. Come be a part of this inspirational, motivational, and informative day hosted by Pawsitively Texas!

WHO SHOULD ATTEND: Animal advocates, animal welfare and humane organizations, rescue groups, students, activists, animal law attorneys, researchers, academia, animal control officers, animal shelter board of directors and oversight committee members, shelter directors, employees and volunteers, elected officials at the city, county and state levels, tax-payers, and anyone else who wants to help move their community's animal welfare system from the antiquated kill system to the morally humane no kill shelter. SPEAKERS:

Nathan Winograd is a graduate of Stanford Law School, a former criminal prosecutor and corporate attorney, has spoken nationally and internationally on animal sheltering issues, has written animal protection legislation at the state and national level, has created successful No Kill programs in both urban and rural communities, and has consulted with a wide range of animal protection groups including some of the largest and best known in the nation. He is also the founder of the No Kill Advocacy Center, and the author of several books (Redemption, Irreconcilable Differences, and All American Vegan).

Dr. Ellen Jefferson is the Founder of Emancipet, Executive Director, Austin Pets Alive, and a Veterinarian. Austin is not only the largest Texas open admissions city shelter to choose to become no kill, they are the largest in the US and Ellen has been a leader in Austin no kill.

Cheryl Schneider is the Williamson County Animal Services Director. Located in Georgetown Texas, Wilco is currently the only open admissions county animal shelter in Texas to choose, and succeed in becoming no kill.

Sgt. Karl Bailey is the Seagoville Animal Shelter Director. Under Sgt Bailey's leadership, the open admissions city shelter dismantled the gas chamber, created a community volunteer group, and became a true no kill shelter.

Micheal Kitkoski is the founder of Rockwall Pets. Michael has worked closely with the City to not only increase adoptions from a 46% save rate to 96% save, but to also vote to become a no kill open admissions city shelter.

Patty Lepley Alexander is the Austin Pets Alive PASS Coordinator. Positive Alternatives to Shelter Surrender (P.A.S.S.) is a service provided by Austin Pets Alive! (APA!) to help people help their pets to find new homes or to stay in their current homes.

Alva Logsdon Cranford is the founder of Pawsitively Texas and a marketing media professional. After rescuing several shelter pets, she found she could save more lives by using her marketing expertise to raise awareness.

Attention readers!! A Typhoon is scheduled to hit the WOW Hall on Friday, March 2, accompanied by Motopony and Ravenna Woods.

Typhoon is an indie rock band that began in Salem in 2005 and is currently based in Portland. The band has numerous members and has released two albums, two EPs, a split 7 inch record with Olympia-based band LAKE, and have contributed to a number of compilations. Last August Typhoon made their television debut on Late Show with David Letterman.

Typhoon's music has always been marked by complicated arrangements and careful orchestration. Live performances routinely involve 12 or more band members playing at once.

"The group masterfully combines indie rock instrumentals and vocals with violins, percussion, hand claps, xylophone, horns and a choir of other instruments, making for inspiring and catchy songs," states Lauren Rosenthal (mySpoonful).

In 2010 Typhoon was voted #2 in Willamette Week's annual list of the Top Ten Best New Bands in Portland. They have opened for The Thermals, Quasi, Yann Tiersen, Explosions in the Sky and The Decemberists, and toured with Lady Lamb the Beekeeper.

Band Members include Kyle Morton (lead vocals, guitar), Toby Tanabe (bass), Dave Hall (guitar), Pieter Hilton (drums), Alex Fitch (drums), Tyler Ferrin (horns), Ryan McAlpin (trumpet), Devin Gallagher (percussion), Nora Zimmerely (vocals, piano), Shannon Steele (violin), Jen Hufnagel (violin), Eric Stipe (trumpet) and Samantha Kushnick (cello).

"In person, the Portland collective is both joyful and dark, subtle and – with around 10 members at most shows – entirely overwhelming in its explosiveness," reports Willamette Week. "Between the sweat and the choir – everyone in the band sings – Typhoon shows can feel like I'd imagine church feels for religious people. It's soul-stirring. It would seem to be an experience that no compact disc or vinyl record could hold. And none has, until Hunger and Thirst."

Typhoon followed up 2010's Hunger and Thirst LP with the EP A New Kind of House in 2011.

MOTOPONY

The hard-soul/glitch-folk contained on Motopony's self-titled debut is guided by soulful machines Daniel Blue and Buddy Ross along with guitarist Brantley Cady and drummer Forrest Mauvais.

The band's beginnings are intrinsically tied to the day that Blue picked up the guitar at age 27, after years of expressing himself through the design label he began years previously, but has since put on hiatus to pursue music. Blue's foray into music happened to be the five-year anniversary of his mother's death, and the nascent stages of Blue's songwriting were consumed by this loss – his grief the lens through which everything refracted.

In the intervening four years, the depth of Blue's songwriting has deepened and grown, and is complemented by Ross's tempered arrangements. Blue's bizarre tunings – three E-strings, spaced out in an odd pattern – were the perfect marriage to Ross's modern, anchoring cadences.

"The songs are really captivating – and there's so much space for me to fill it up with what I do," explains Ross.

RAVENNA WOODS

Seattle's Ravenna Woods is a three-man band that plays haunting urban folk full of eerie vocals and spiraling fingerpicked guitar.

The group's drum-driven sound is spare and rhythmic, punctuated by harmonic howls and whoops. Sometimes it calls to mind a native pow-wow; sometimes, a soundtrack to a spooky movie. It's all played at a volume dialed back just enough to hear the patterns and textures, and it's not nearly as cerebral as it sounds.

Notes The Seattle Times, "combining dark melodies, intricate vocal harmonies, and insistent hard-hitting percussion, Ravenna Woods represents the dark side of Seattle's indie folk movement; a Kafkaesque figure in a room of Guthries and Gershwins."

On Saturday, March 3, Scion Presents The End Is Near Tour with 12th Planet , Flinch and Kastle.

12TH PLANET

12th Planet is an LA born Electro DJ classified as 'Dubstep 'and 'Jungle'. His sounds are not for the faint of heart but for those looking to seriously shake it. With deep, heavy bass lines in every track and some gravely entrancing vibes, 12th Planet has a powerful Dubstep dance draw that will be putting the Hall's floating dance floor to the test.

Born John Dadzie and raised on the genre known as 'Jungle", Dadzie became the man, DJ and producer we know today as 12th Planet. Originally creating more of a drum and bass type sound under a different alias, 12th Planet shifted his efforts to more of a raw and uncensored Dubstep focus.

His career began when he started a record label by the name of Imperial Recordings after linking up with DJ Lith, a fellow producer. 12th Planet now owns SMOG records and produces alongside Flinch, SPL, Noah D, DLX, Pawn, EMU, and Kelly Dean. But not all of the multitalented Dadzie's time is spent in the studio; as a DJ 12th Planet has smashed festival after festival with his raw power including the biggest electronic festival in North America, the Electric Daisy Carnival. The power of his bass has also been felt throughout the crowds at the Coachella Valley Music and Arts Festival, the Ultra Music Festival, Nocturnal, and Beyond Wonderland.

The multiple alias DJ and producer has been around long enough to touch the careers of a number of big names in the business including Rusko, Skream and Skrillex. Frequently his own remixes are heard through the speakers of these very artists sound systems from show to show, as he has not only worked in the studio with but toured alongside many big names, most recently with Skrillex's The Mothership Tour.

Usually playing larger venues, 12th Planet's intergalactic vibrations and The End Is Near Tour will surely bring a packed and hungry crowd to the WOW Hall for some apocalyptic Electro.

FLINCH

Coming into this world as one Adam Glassco, Flinch, is a veteran producer who began his career in the realm of Drum and Bass as do many electro stars. Originally making beats in LA, his sound eventually moved toward a synthy-based dupstep that can knock you off your seat while simultaneously keeping up a catchy melody and some gentle vocal tracks. Robotic sounds topped with a dash of soothing female vocals are a surprisingly tasty recipe.

Kicking things off in the year 2000, Flinch also spent his early career in the production business. Now based out of Huntington Beach, California, he has teamed up on SMOG records alongside 12th Planet but also works on the label known as Trouble and Bass, which recently released a compilation by the name of Heavy Bass Champions of the World vol. XV. The bass focused compilation includes artists like Drop The Lime, Acid Jakcs, AC Slater, and 12 other bass heavy weights (Flinch included).

KASTLE

Humbly coming from somewhere other than the electro heavy LA, Kastle originated in Pittsburgh growing up on a self taught guitar and piano. He began to move towards a more electronic career around the age of only 14 and soon enough Barrett Richards (better know as Kastle) was making waves in the dance scene. The talented Richards didn't jump right into the world of the DJ; his well rounded sound comes from a degree in engineering paired with 14 years of experience in the world of production. This man is no rookie.

Several different labels and multiple artists have been graced by the work of Kastle in the past including Ministry of Sound and Scion A/V records. He has also done production work for some big names such as Blu Mar Ten and The Glitch Mob. With bass breaking beats, original and sampled vocals, and his lifetime of experience Kastle will bring a veteran's touch to The End Is Near Tour and the WOW Hall.

THE DEAN'S LIST

Now you have another chance to make The Dean's List. The Boston-based hip-hop trio, who made their WOW Hall debut in November, returns in support of their new album Generation X. The crew consists of rapper Sonny Shotz, producer and business man DJ Mendoza, and and engineer Mik Beats.

Mendoza and Mik met while studying at Berklee College of Music in Boston. Mendoza and Sonny Shotz, who attended the nearby The New England Institute of Art, went to high school together and joined with Mik in 2009 to form The Dean's List. In September 2010 The Dean's List released their first mixtape Undeclared. They received positive reviews for being, "motivated and talented individuals who strive to make good music." They went on to release The Drive In on February 26, 2011.

ROCKIE FRESH

Chicago native Rockie Fresh is a 20-year-old rapper who is already one of the hottest independent artists in hip-hop. With a unique sound that has deep urban undertones and an alternative rocker mentality, Rockie continues to break barriers and defy conventions. Working with artists ranging from Fall Out Boy lead singer Patrick Stump to internet phenom Lil B, and with co-signs from the likes of new-age college rap sensations like Asher Roth and Kidz In The Hall, Rockie's grassroots movement has been reported everywhere from Complex Magazine to BroBible.com, The Source to MyspaceMusic, and BET to RockTheVote.

Fresh's debut mixtape, Rockie's Modern Life, was released in December of 2009; Rockie took to the stage for the very first time in his career at his own release show. Discover economics as if people and nature really mattered — enlightened economics that knows we are all connected. Join Charles Eisenstein — acclaimed author, teacher and speaker — for a day-long intensive workshop to explore activism in a time of profound transition.

Our world is facing a series of deepening challenges in 2012: economic crisis, ecosystem collapse, water and soil depletion, and a shrinking supply of cheap energy. These challenges will require new ways of thinking, and a whole new paradigm of activism and leadership.

In this workshop you will realize a new level of confidence, commitment, and effectiveness in what you are already doing — an approach that doesn't depend on trying harder, but is a natural evolution. This daylong event is a hands-on exploration of becoming more effective as change agents. It is also about reuniting the long-sundered realms of the activist and the spiritual practitioner.

On Wednesday, March 14, the CCPA and KRVM proudly welcome Hot Buttered Rum and Cornmeal for a co-headline bill.

HOT BUTTERED RUM

Have you ever been to one of those shows at the WOW Hall where the floor is bouncing because everyone is having the time of their life? Well, Hot Buttered Rum brings just that kind of energy and atmosphere. If like string band music, if you like jam band funk music — then you will love the evolution that has become Hot Buttered Rum in 2012.

The band originally started as an acoustic string band but life in the jam scene has transformed their music and they've added some heart pounding percussion and amped up electronics. With the influences of the West Coast, this band has been wowing audiences and music critics alike for the past seven years. Incorporating powerful lyrics that are fun, thought provoking and danceable, the real reasons to see these mountain top rockers are the up tempo dance grooves laid down by mandolins, fiddles, banjos, guitars and all held together by the upright bass.

The current touring lineup includes: Aaron Redner (fiddle and mandolin), Bryan Home (upright bass), Nat Keefe (guitar), Erik Yates (banjo, guitar, woodwinds, and resophonic guitar), and Lucas Carlton (drums).

Having made a name for themselves by playing endless tours and varied festival lineups, Hot Buttered Rum's credits include Bonnaroo, High Sierra, Wakarusa, Telluride Bluegrass Festival, and the Newport Folk Festival. With three studio albums under their belt the band is currently in San Francisco working on a fourth with famed music producer Steve Berlin who has done work for String Cheese Incident, Los Lobos, R.E.M, Sheryl Crow and John Lee Hooker. The boys in Hot Buttered Rum are excited about releasing this album, which will mark a huge stepping stone in the band's stylistic evolution, sometime in 2012.

CORNMEAL

With eleven years in the bluegrass circle, Cornmeal has paid its dues. Now, with the revolution of the recent jam-grass explosion, Cornmeal has become one of the most progressive string bands on tour. Influenced by Americana roots and folk music, Cornmeal's style is much more up-tempo and danceable than traditional string music. Cornmeal has managed to make traditional folk music relevant with today's youth by constantly pushing the boundaries of string music.

Cornmeal's recently released live recordings, Live in Chicago Vol 1 and its follow up Vol 2, are the band's homage to fan appreciation and finding its place in the jam band scene. Cornmeal previously released three studio albums and, with a relentless touring schedule, they have had a chance to really hone their live performances. After 11 years playing together you can really sense "the unspoken conversations" amongst band members as they transition from ruthlessly rehearsed picking into more exploratory improvised jams that reach huge musical climaxes.

"Featuring more of the smoking hot picking, intricate yet explosive improvised jams, and constantly evolving sound that has come to define this unique group, Vol. II is not just for Cornmeal fans, but for anyone with an ear for a passionate performance and honest musicianship," writes Herchel Concepcion.

Having played numerous festivals across the country, Cornmeal has shared the stage with musical luminaries such as The David Grisman Quintet, Leftover Salmon, Yonder Mountain String Band, Darkstar Orchestra, moe., Umphrey's McGee, Little Feat, John Hartford and The Del McCoury Band. On Thursday, March 15, the CCPA and KRVM proudly welcome singer-songwriter William Fitzsimmons back to the WOW Hall with special guest Denison Witmer.

NPR Calls him,"a songwriter with vision." Over the course of the past year, William Fitzsimmons has toured 60-plus cities in support of his critically acclaimed fourth full length, Gold In The Shadow. Known for his onstage banter, Fitzsimmons will bring his unique voice and lyricism to 35 venues, including Eugene's famed WOW Hall.

Gold In The Shadow was released digitally on December 20th. With the purchase of the digital deluxe, fans will get an additional 14 bonus tracks featuring three previously unavailable recordings, including a new acoustic version of "Let You Break". During its original release, Gold In The Shadow landed at #3 on the Billboard Heatseekers Chart, as well as #3 on the Folk Albums Chart, #41 on the Overall Digital Albums Chart – a career high debut.

Based in Illinois, William is perhaps best known for his songs "Passion Play" and "Please Don't Go", which aired during pivotal scenes in ABC's medical drama Grey's Anatomy. His first two full-length albums, Until When We Are Ghosts (2005) and Goodnight (2006) were completely self-produced and recorded by Fitzsimmons at his former home in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania. The Sparrow And The Crow (2008) was his first studio record.

William's music has also been featured on ABC's Brothers & Sisters and Grey's Anatomy spin-off Private Practice, MTV's Life of Ryan and Teen Wolf, The CW's One Tree Hill, ABC Family's Greek, and Lifetime's Army Wives, and he has been given reference in Billboard, Rolling Stone, Paste, Spin, Musikexpress, Uncut, Q Magazine, and Performing Songwriter Magazine.

Fitzsimmons was born the youngest child of two blind parents, both of whom were recreational musicians. He is proficient on the piano, guitar, trombone, banjo, melodica, ukulele and mandolin, and is known for mixing folk music with electronica in some of his production. He is often compared to Iron & Wine, Sufjan Stevens and the late Elliott Smith.

William's career in music came only after completing a Master's Degree in counseling at Geneva College, and working as a mental health therapist. Prior to his graduate studies, Fitzsimmons worked with the mentally ill for several years. It was during a summer break in the midst of graduate school that Fitzsimmons recorded a collection of songs on home recording equipment which would subsequently become his debut album.

DENISON WITMER

Fifteen years and nine albums into his career, Denison Witmer is familiar with the unexpected intersections that can take place between life and musical career. His newest album, The Ones Who Wait, is a reflection of the growth that comes through life experience. In Denison's own words, The Ones Who Wait is about, "patience and reverence. Being mindful and open to what you're experiencing. A desire to take hold of what's happening in your life, yet trusting the mystery of it enough to let go and participate rather than dictate."

In the midst of recording, Denison found himself pulled back to his native Lancaster, Pennsylvania, where father, who was previously diagnosed with cancer, had taken a turn for the worse.

"I stopped making music," says Denison. "I stopped doing everything. I just spent time with him."

A few months later, his dad passed away. Denison grieved with his family, and remembered.

He returned to the studio with a new approach. What began as an EP grew into a full-length album, as Denison added songs that reflected the changes in the intervening year.

Denison's albums have always been markedly personal, each one a significant milestone, but The Ones Who Wait marks a whole new level of intimacy with listeners. Getting married, starting a business, and watching his dad close the final chapter on his life have helped Denison tell his own story better. Bringing things full circle, as he wrapped up post-production on The Ones Who Wait, Denison found out he was going to be a father too.

The sound of The Ones Who Wait indicates a new maturity in Denison's musical career. His guitar and voice sit front and center in the sound, evoking a melodic warmth reminiscent of 70s-era singer-songwriters like Paul Simon and Jackson Browne. His songwriting trademark is a finesse he uses to balance dark and light in the songs.

The Ones Who Wait is Denison's first release for Asthmatic Kitty Records, who will also be releasing a "part two" of the record in the summer of 2012.

On Saturday, March 17, the CCPA and University of Oregon Campus Radio 88.1 FM KWVA proudly welcome Robert Schwartzman (singer/songwriter of Rooney) along with The Relationship (featuring Brian Bell of Weezer).

Make sure to bring your Saturday night dancing feet to the WOW Hall if you're planning to attend this show of proven and accomplished rock n' roll musicians. Robert Schwartzman, whose musical journey began in 1999 when he formed the Los Angeles alternative rock/pop band Rooney, is sure to bring an uptempo and high energy show on the Eugene stop of his West Coast Special 2012 Tour that spans from San Diego up to Vancouver, BC.

Schwartzman has arts and entertainment in his blood. His mother, actress Talia Shire, played Adrian Balboa in Rocky and Connie Corleone in The Godfather, and his brother, Jason Schwartzman, is an actor (Rushmore, I Heart Huckabees) and musician (Phantom Planet). Robert himself has acted in a few projects that include the wonderful movie The Virgin Suicides. Oh, and you also may have heard of his uncle Francis Ford Coppola and his cousin Nicholas Cage.

While his career has been balanced, it's been the music that has garnered the most acclaim and where it seems most of his focus and attention has been. A globally touring act with Rooney since 2002, he released his first solo album called Double Capricorn in 2011 which was recorded in his home studio in L.A. His motivation behind the solo album was to try a process a little different than creating an album with a band, and he accomplished this by playing most of the parts on the recording himself.

"I had a great time working on this music, and I feel very lucky to be in a position of making music independently, and sharing it directly with my fans," says Schwartzman (robertschwartzman.com).

A slight departure from Rooney's sound, the music off Double Capricorn has a retro 80's synth feel to it that is still based in rock/pop — and is bound to get you moving.

In addition, as a show of generosity and kindness that most Eugeneans can appreciate, all of the profits from the sale of the album will go to the Tibetan Healing Fund, in hopes to build a new birthing center.

THE RELATIONSHIP

Opening for Robert Schwartzman will be The Relationship (featuring Brian Bell of Weezer). The Relationship was formed in 2006 by guitarist Brian Bell and Nate Shaw of Die Hunns. The band also includes Eric J (keyboardist), Jason Hiller (bass) and Blair Sinta (drums).

The Relationship released their first album in November 2010; it is self-titled. The album is a good old fashioned American rock album that is both crunchy and melodic, and in Bell's words, is a "musical journey spanning many emotions, including joy and heartbreak."

Bell considers this their first real tour, and says his band is thrilled to be joining Schwartzman.

The West Coast Special 2012 Tour is a mid March mini tour of eight shows that starts in San Francisco on March 15th and ends in San Diego on the 24th and is definitely worth the price of admission. On Sunday, March 18, the CCPA and KLCC proudly welcome Seun Kuti & Egypt 80 along with special guests AfroMassive.

Touring in support of his 2011 release From Africa With Fury: Rise, Seun Anikulapo Kuti heads up Egypt 80, the extraordinary combo first fronted by his renowned father Fela Kuti. The album follows Kuti's critically praised debut, 2008's Many Things, which was unanimously hailed for continuing Fela's musical legacy. From Africa With Fury: Rise sees Kuti finding his own idiosyncratic voice as songwriter, singer and band leader — its songs and sonic approach marked by a provocative edge and mature self-assurance.

Produced by Brian Eno, John Reynolds and Kuti, the album captures Seun and Egypt 80's extraordinary power, fraught with the scorching rhythms and kinetic funk energy that has earned the band — as ever, under the leadership of musical director/keyboardist Lekan Animashaun — worldwide acclaim as one of today's most incendiary live acts. With Kuti's booming vocal stylings at the forefront, songs like "African Soldiers" and "Mr. Big Thief" are fueled by call-and-response hooks, breakneck tempos, and combative, topical lyricism which firmly sets the classic Egypt 80 sound in the modern era.

"I wanted to do something completely different," Kuti says. "Not different by trying to be American or European with my sound, just trying to make a very different album from my last album."

The album's basic tracks were recorded in Rio de Janeiro. In the fall of 2010, Kuti made two visits to London where he mixed the record alongside legendary producers Brian Eno and John Reynolds. Eno — an avowed fan who had previously invited Kuti and his band to perform at Sydney's Luminous Festival 2009 and the UK's Brighton Festival 2010 — has nothing but the highest praise for Seun and his band, hailing them for, "making some of the biggest, wildest, live-est music on the planet."

Co-producer Reynolds (Sinéad O'Connor, U2) agrees, applauding Kuti and Egypt 80's distinctive Afrobeat as, "a musical adrenaline rush."

While Kuti has nothing but the highest praise for his collaborators, he is equally quick to note that the songs of From Africa With Fury: Rise had been written more than a year prior and had long been featured in live performance. Seun sees the recording process as merely a means to an end, a way of capturing his music's magic for posterity.

"Afrobeat has to go from stage to studio, not studio to stage," he says. "I don't believe in going into the studio to write songs. You create music in the world, outside, in the environment. You create music with nature, not in the studio. You go to the studio to record, that's it. Music created in the studio is commercial music, music that only wants to sell, that has nothing to do with the world."

Born in 1983, Seun first began performing with Egypt 80 at the age of nine, warming up audiences with renditions of his father's songs. After Fela's death in 1997, Seun stepped to the front, leading the celebrated combo as both lead vocalist and saxophonist. While his father's influence cannot be understated, Kuti was determined to cut his own distinctive musical path.

"What inspires me is the time that I live in," Kuti says. "So when I write my music, it's from the perspective of a 27-year-old man living in 2011, instead of a 30-year-old man living in the 1970s."

Sadly, Kuti finds himself challenging many of the same injustices his father fought, from corporate greedheads to militaristic leaders to the ever-futile war on drugs. Perhaps the album's most unequivocal battle cry is the blistering "Rise," in which Kuti impels listeners to fight "the petroleum companies" that "use our oil to destroy our land", "the diamond companies" that "use our brothers as slaves for the stone" and "companies like "Monsanto and Halliburton" which "use their food to make my people hungry." He sees his role as that of an educator, speaking truth to power in order to provoke awareness and debate throughout his beloved homeland.

"In Africa today, most people are struggling in silence," Kuti says. "The systematic oppression of the people has made them blinded to their reality. Everybody's just thinking about survival. Nobody wants to stand up for anything, everybody just wants to tow the line. So I'm trying to make people think about these things that they are forgetting. I want to inspire people to want things to change."

Seun Kuti is determined to speak to the new generation of young Africans born after his father's glory days. If he learned but one lesson from Fela, it is that no one has greater impact on hearts and mind than the true artist. As such, the powerhouse protest music found on From Africa With Fury: Rise serves as a kind of musical antidote to the corporate pop that he feels is polluting Africa's airwaves, distracting its citizens from the things that truly matter.

"Music has great impact on people's feelings," Kuti says. "That's what music should be. Pop music today is all about me, me, me. Nobody is singing about we. But nothing can change if we don't look out for our brothers and sisters."

AFROMASSIVE

A powerhouse of Afrobeat and funk, AfroMassive is a new ensemble bringing exciting new music from northern California. In honor of the musical legacy left by 70's Nigerian musician/activist Fela Anikulapo Kuti, AfroMassive's stylistic approach uses the Afrobeat music pioneered by Fela as a jump-off point. Utilizing Afrobeat's unique instrumentation and musical aesthetic, AfroMassive brings their own influences to the table — in-your-face funk, the improvisational nuances of jazz, elements of electronic music and hip-hop, and influences from West Africa, Cuba and Brazil.

Some of the musicians in Afromassive are or were members of Bay Area Afrobeat cohorts ALBINO! and have also been a part of such groups as Gamelan X, SaQi, Everyone Orchestra, The Monophonics, Jacob Fred Jazz Oddessy, Lagos Roots Afrobeat Ensemble, MooGot 2 and more. The group was founded in Humboldt County in 2007, but has really developed since relocating to the Bay Area. The group has diversified its membership, its music and taken the sound to the next dimension. Don't miss them!

Fresh off the cover of CMJ with their #1 charting album Therapy at 3, Eligh (Living Legends) and Amp Live (Zion I) announced their first ever headlining tour together. The duo made their debut performances in December on the "How The Grouch Stole Christmas Tour" — giving fans a high energy show every night with Eligh's rapid fire delivery and Amp's one of a kind MPC guitar.

The album title was inspired by the duo's unconstrained and unformatted recording process. Viewed as therapy sessions, the format allowed Eligh to write each song free form, spilling whatever was on his mind. With Amp Live's stellar production, Eligh, who usually handles the bulk of his own production, was able to fully concentrate on digging deep to pull out topics that include the reason why he gets tattoos, his battle with smoking cigarettes, past relationships, and using music as a form of therapy. Amp Live delivers powerful sonic backdrops infusing the boom-bap ethos of independent hip-hop with tinges of electronic music, mixed with live instrumentation, all rounded out with an edgy aesthetic.

An outside-of-the-box MC and producer, Eligh was an important contributor to the development of Cali's hip-hop underground as he helped construct the sound of the Living Legends with his productions. While still in high school, the Los Angeles-born rapper/producer co-founded a hip-hop duo with MC Scarub called the Boogalu Badboys, but when they crossed paths with Murs, they became 3 Melancholy Gypsys (or 3MG).

Eligh eventually moved to the Bay Area. There, he the Grouch, which ultimately led to 3MG's incorporation into the Living Legends. Combining his dogged work ethic with the Legends' D.I.Y. approach, Eligh issued almost a dozen LPs within the span of ten years, not to mention providing beats for those outside the Legends camp (sometimes under the producer alias Gandalf), including Company Flow, Pigeon John, and WWE wrestler John Cena. The mid- to late '90s saw the release of self-pressed albums As They Pass (1996) and Gas Dream (1999); however, in the 2000s, Eligh concocted darker and more cryptic albums, such as Poltergeist (2003) and Enigma (2005). n 2010, Eligh released his twelfth album and best selling album as an independent artist, Grey Crow. Eligh is also involved in a number of LL offshoots including the Righteous Brothers Project and G&E, aka the Grouch & Eligh.

Amp Live is best known as half of the duo Zion I. Amp Live furthered his production career collaborating with Goapele, Planet Asia, Too Short, Chali 2na, Codany Holiday and Del the Funky Homosapien, as well as remixing works by MGMT, Linkin Park, and Radiohead. His work has also been featured in a number of movies and TV shows, most prominently in ESPN's Playmakers, but also Honey, Big Fat Liar, America's Next Top Model and SportsCenter.
